Historically the United States has been known as one of the top countries for refugee settlement. Refugees include men, women, and children who are fleeing their native countries due to war, persecution, and political upheaval and have decided to cross borders to seek safety in other countries. With the influx of refugees seeking safety in foreign places, many are mistakenly getting involved with human trafficking. In the USA, this issue is very common but many people are not able to identify when and where it is happening. HTAC wants to increase public awareness about human trafficking in the United States as well as ways to get involved to help the issue.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics is the statistical agency of the U.S. Department of Justice. James P. Lynch is the director. This report was written by Duren Banks and Tracey Kyckelhahn. Ron Malega verified the report

Banks, D., & Kyckelhahn, T. (2011). Characteristics of suspected human trafficking incidents, 2008-2010. PsycEXTRA Dataset. https://doi.org/10.1037/e725812011-001

We draw on data from a survey of state crime-reporting agencies and case studies of human-trafficking crime reporting conducted in two U.S. states to explore the challenges that local police agencies face reporting human trafficking.
